Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction

According to studies, one in two men over 50 suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED) to some extent. Although ED is more prevalent in males as they become older, there are other factors at play as well.
Previously, medical professionals believed that psychological issues like stress and worry were the primary causes of eating disorders.

What is Erectile Dysfunction or ED?

The most frequent sexual issue that men bring to their doctor’s attention is erectile dysfunction, or ED. The inability to achieve or maintain an erection that is firm enough for intercourse is known as erectile dysfunction. Damage to the penis’s erectile tissue and muscle is another aspect of ED.
While occasional erection issues are common in men, ED that develops gradually over time or occurs frequently during intercourse is abnormal. It needs to be attended to.
ED may occur as a result of:
• Limited blood flow in the penis or damage to the nerves;
• Stress or emotional factors;
• As a precursor to a more serious condition, such as heart disease, atherosclerosis (hardening or blocked arteries);
• High blood pressure; or
• High blood sugar from diabetes.

What are the Symptoms of ED?

  • Symptoms for ED may include:getting an erection, but it not lasting long enough for sex
  •  getting a partial erection that is not firm enough to have sex
  •  not being able to get an erection at all

What Causes ED?

Finding the cause(s) of your ED will help to treat the problem. ED can result from health problems, emotional issues, or from both. Some known risk factors for ED are:
• Injury to the pelvis
• Surgery for cancers of the prostate, colon, rectum or bladder
• Heart disease
• Peripheral artery disease
• High blood pressure
• High blood sugar (diabetes)
• Alcohol use
• Drug use
• Smoking or vaping
• Some medicines
• Emotional stress

Emotional Causes of ED

Sex needs both the mind and body to work together. Emotional or relationship problems can cause or worsen ED.
Some emotional issues that can lead to ED are:
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Relationship conflicts
• Stress at home or work
• Stress from social, cultural or religious conflicts
• Worry about sexual performance

GET DIAGNOSED

Diagnosing ED starts with a conversation. Your healthcare provider will ask you questions about your general health and your erection problem.
ED History
Your experience will help your provider learn if your ED stems from your desire for sex, erection function, ejaculation or orgasm .
How long have you had these symptoms? Did they start slowly or all at once?
Do you wake in the morning or during the night with an erection?
If you do have erections, how firm are they? Is penetration difficult?
Do you have problems with sex drive or arousal?
Do your erections change at different times, like when entering a partner, during stimulation by mouth, or with masturbation?
• Do you have pain with erections?

Physical Exam

The purpose of the physical examination is to assess your overall health. An examination of your genitalia (penis and testicles) is frequently the first step in treating ED. The examination may concentrate on your heart and blood system (heart, peripheral pulses, and blood pressure) depending on your age and risk factors. Your doctor may perform a rectal exam to examine your prostate based on your age and family history.
Advanced Erectile Function Tests
• Blood work to check testosterone and other male hormones
• Blood work to measure blood sugar (diabetes)
• Ultrasonography (Penile Doppler) to check blood flow
• An injection into the penis with a vascular stimulant to cause an erection
• Nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) to check for sleep erections overnight.

GET TREATED

Lifestyle Changes
Improve your eating habits (like eating more plant-based foods, and limiting high-fat or processed foods)
Maintain a healthy weight
Stop smoking
Increase exercise
Limit drugs and alcohol
Sleep more (ideally 7-8 hours per night)
Medical Treatment
Oral Drugs Oral drugs known as PDE type-5 inhibitors increase penile blood flow. These are drugs that are taken as a pill by mouth.
Tadalafil
Sildenafil
Vardenafil
Most often, the side effects of PDE-5 inhibitors are mild and last just a short time. The most common side effects are:
• Facial flushing
• Headache
• Indigestion
• Muscle aches
• Stuffy nose

Vacuum Erection Device

A plastic tube that fits over the penis and seals with the body’s skin is a vacuum erection tool. The erectile tissue is surrounded by a low-pressure vacuum created by a pump at the other end of the tube. An erection is the outcome of the pump’s pressure. To keep the blood in the penis, an elastic ring is then placed on the base of the penis. For as long as half an hour, it can produce an erection. 75 out of 100 men can use a vacuum erection gadget to achieve a functional erection with the right training.

Surgical Treatments

The main surgical treatment of ED involves a penile implant, also called a penile prosthesis Implants for the penis Your body is completely encased by penile implants. They create a rigid penis that enables natural, impromptu sex. Despite the dangers associated with any operation, penile implant surgery has a high success rate and great patient satisfaction among ED patients. For a lot of men, this is an excellent option. Two varieties of penile implants are available.

• A bendable, semi-rigid implant The most basic type of implant consists of two metal and silicone rods that are easily bent. The hardness required for sexual penetration is provided by these rods. The implant may be raised for intercourse and bent down for urine.

• Implantable Inflatable Fluid-filled cylinders are inserted longitudinally into the penis using an inflatable implant. These cylinders are connected by tubing to a pump that is positioned inside the scrotum, which is the space between the testicles. Pressure causes the cylinders to expand and the penis to become rigid when it is pumped. For your spouse, inflatable implants create a natural-feeling erection that looks normal. Men
can regulate the size and, occasionally, the firmness of their erections with the implant. Couples can engage in spontaneous intimacy with inflatable implants. The orgasm and penile feeling of a man should hardly vary at all. Penile implants can aid with erections, but they cannot reverse the effects of cancer or its treatment on ejaculation, orgasm, or feeling.
